Do you need a bilingual website? Reaching Spanish-speaking customers in Colorado

Why auto-translate buttons fall short, what a real bilingual site includes, and where to start.

Close to three in ten Denver residents are Hispanic or Latino, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, and many of them prefer to do business in Spanish. Not every business needs a bilingual website. But if you serve the Latino community, or want to, a Spanish version can bring in customers your competitors aren’t reaching.

Who should consider it

  • Businesses where many customers already speak Spanish
  • Restaurants, food trucks and bakeries with Latin American food
  • Home services, like cleaning, where trust and clear communication matter
  • Owners who speak Spanish themselves, which is a real advantage worth showing

Translation widgets aren’t enough

A button that auto-translates the page is better than nothing, but not by much. The translations often sound awkward, and Google usually doesn’t treat them as real Spanish pages, so they rarely show up when people search in Spanish.

What a real bilingual site has

  • Separate Spanish pages with their own web addresses, like /es/
  • Language tags (hreflang) that tell Google which version to show to whom
  • A language switch on every page that takes people to the same page in the other language, not back to the homepage
  • Spanish written for how people actually search, like “cerca de mí,” not a word-for-word translation

Do you need to translate every page?

No. Start with the pages that bring in customers: home, your main services and contact. You can add the rest over time.

Make the rest of the experience match

If your website says “Hablamos español,” someone needs to answer the phone in Spanish. Add Spanish to your Google Business Profile, reply to Spanish reviews in Spanish, and make sure your forms and confirmation messages work in both languages. The website opens the door, and the rest has to follow through.
