Do I need a website if I already have Instagram and Facebook?

What social media does well, where it falls short, and why most local businesses need both a website and social pages.

A lot of owners we talk to run their whole business from Instagram or Facebook, and it works. Customers see the food, the before-and-after photos or the new products, and they message you. So it’s fair to ask: why pay for a website at all?

The short answer is that social media and a website do different jobs. Social media keeps the customers who already follow you interested. A website helps new people who have never heard of you find you, trust you and contact you.

What social media does well

  • Shows your work fast. Photos and videos of your food, jobs or products are the best advertising there is.
  • Keeps regulars coming back. Specials, new menu items and event dates reach the people who already like you.
  • Makes it easy to message you. Many customers would rather send a DM than call.

Where social media falls short

  • People searching on Google don’t see it. When someone types “catering near me” or “house cleaning Aurora,” Google mostly shows business profiles and websites, not Instagram posts.
  • You don’t own it. If your account gets hacked, suspended or the app changes its rules, your followers and posts can disappear overnight.
  • Information gets buried. Your prices, hours, service area and menu end up spread across old posts and highlights that new customers won’t dig through.
  • It can look less established. For bigger jobs like catering a wedding or a commercial cleaning contract, many customers check for a real website before they reach out.

What a website adds

  • A page for every service or menu. Each page can show up on Google for the exact thing someone searches for.
  • Clear answers in one place. Hours, prices or starting prices, service areas, FAQs and how to book.
  • A form that collects the details you need. Event date, guest count, address or the type of job, so you can quote faster.
  • Something you own. Your domain and your site stay yours, no matter what happens to any app.

You don’t have to choose

The setup that works best for most local businesses is simple: a website as your home base, a Google Business Profile so you show up on Google Maps, and social media to stay in front of your regulars. Link them together. Put your website in your Instagram bio, add your Instagram to your website, and use the same name, phone number and hours everywhere.

When social media alone is fine

  • You’re just starting out and testing if people want what you sell
  • Almost all your customers come from word of mouth and repeat orders
  • You’re fully booked and not looking for new customers right now

If you want new customers who don’t know you yet, a website and a Google profile are usually where the next ones come from.
